Vegan Mofongo Recipe With Tostones

Mofongo is a traditional Puerto Rican dish made from mashed plantains, garlic, olive oil, and pork cracklings or bacon. The plantains are fried and mashed together with garlic and other ingredients until they form a ball shape. The ball is then typically served in a pilón (a wooden mortar and pestle) and filled with a meat or seafood stew, soup, or any other savory filling. Mofongo is a staple of Puerto Rican cuisine and is enjoyed in many Caribbean countries as well. Since it is a staple of Caribbean cuisine, it would be a good touch to serve it with a classic Caribbean snack like plantain tostones chips. To read more about what we could offer you, continue reading below to read more about making this dish with plantain chips instead of fried plantains.

Is Mofongo Vegan?

Mofongo is typically not vegan as it contains pork cracklings or bacon as a key ingredient. However, it is possible to make a vegan version of mofongo with the right vegan mofongo recipe by omitting the pork and replacing it with other plant-based ingredients. For example, vegan mofongo can be made with vegetable broth instead of meat-based broth, and vegan bacon or mushrooms can be used as a substitute for pork. Additionally, some recipes may call for a vegetarian or vegan version of sofrito, a flavoring base that is typically made with onions, garlic, peppers, and sometimes ham or other meat. Overall, mofongo can be adapted to fit a vegan diet with some modifications to the traditional recipe. In this case, we will be using gluten-free diet snacks like tostones plantain chips to add a special touch to the mofongo.
